Spring Green Theatre Trip

What is the Spring Green Theater Trip?

For over 25 years Morningsiders—students, faculty, alum, high school students, community members—have traveled as a group to Spring Green, Wisconsin, to see professional productions of plays by Shakespeare, Shaw, Chekhov, Beckett, Arthur Miller, and other classical playwrights. The trip is sponsored jointly between the English and Performance Arts Departments but is open to everyone.

We travel in car pools about 7 hours each way to Spring Green, an arts community nestled along the Wisconsin River. We stay in a Frank Lloyd Wright school-designed lodging, Spring Valley Inn, which has a restaurant/bar, visitors’ center, and pool. We usually see three plays in either the outdoor stage or the new Touchstone indoor stage, both surrounded by woods. There is free time to visit local attractions such as the House on the Rock, the Frank Lloyd Wright School, the General Store, a theatre bookstore, downtown Madison, or other arts and crafts stores. Often the actors join us for a get-together after the plays to talk with us informally about playing Shakespeare.

Students can apply in the previous spring or early in the fall for student travel grants that lower the price of the trip. We have a limited number of places for the trip—usually between 15 and 20—so sign up early with Marcie Ponder in the English Department.

Students receive study guides to the plays so that they can appreciate them more. The actors are all classical trained so audiences—from middle school on up—can appreciate the marvelous language, riveting comedy and tragedy, and memorable characters in the plays.
