The campus ministry at Morningside College exists to help students, faculty and staff, along with members of the surrounding community, “find their path and share in their journey” through worship experiences, study groups, service opportunities, fellowship activities, leadership development and more.
We are dedicated to social justice, interfaith cooperation and radical love. We encourage questions and facilitate discussions, worship, actions and other endeavors which will lead to a deeper relationship with God and make a positive and lasting impact on individuals, our community and the world. This supportive family of faith employs no circles of exclusion and provides open arms to all.
About the Chaplain
Andy Nelson is an ordained pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Originally from Red Wing, MN, he moved to Sioux City in 2012 when his wife, Dr. Jessica Pleuss, joined Morningside’s psychology faculty. Prior to service as Campus Chaplain at Morningside, Andy served in campus ministry at the University of South Dakota (2012-2015), and as Pastor of Education and Youth Ministry at Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester, MN (2009-2012). He also serves as Pastor of Children, Youth, and Family ministry at St. Mark Lutheran Church, Sioux City.
Andy is passionate about engaging the lives of students around faith, learning, and vocation; coming alongside them in times of joy, struggle, and mundanity; dreaming with them about how God is leading us into service to our neighbors; being challenged with them to respond to God’s longing for justice in the world; and creating space for vibrant worship, profound questions, and mutual care.
Andy and Jessica have three young children whom you will occasionally see in tow about campus. They are also licensed foster parents – so don’t be alarmed if their family expands and contracts in unexpected ways! Andy loves to spend time in his vegetable garden, out in his canoe, and in a comfortable chair with a cup of coffee and a good novel.
